Black Rock Studios new racer boasts some of the most visceral action weve ever seen in a game of its type. In its all-to-brief hands-on demo, SplitSecond launches an all-out assault on our audio and visual senses. Cars hurtle over jumps, drift around corners, bash into barriers and go flying through the air, scattering bits of themselves all over the tracks. The soundtrack is a mix of squealing tyres, screaming engines (apparently augmented by actual lion roars) and pounding drum and bass. The visuals are smooth but urgent; the edges of the frame seem tinged with a blurring effect that kicks up the heart rate. Occasionally, the camera swings around for a cinematic, slow-motion glance as a competitor flips over nine times and slams into a crash barrier, before the shifting back to the games breakneck paced third-person perspective in the blink of an eye. That is, the controls are easy to get to grips with and there are no holds barred once the starting light turns green. Of course, the ability to shunt or rear-end opponents with very little backlash in the physics department isnt exactly new to arcade racers. These features not only open up a raft of insidious opportunities for players to dramatically change the course of the race, but also allows them to drastically alter the shape of the track theyre driving on. Their power meter is placed beneath their cars rear bumper on the largely uncluttered HUD, with their race position and lap-count on either side. There are three levels to the power meter, and the size of the attack the player can use depends on how full the meter is. For example, a lengthy drift around a hairpin bend will fill up one blue bar (which is a third) of the meter. The player can then use this for a small power-play attack such as blowing up a fuel tank on the edge of the track, or having a nearby helicopter drop a crate into the path of an opponent. In single player mode, these are given the full cinematic treatment; the action slows down, the soundtrack fills with explosions and cars and track pieces are sent flying in every direction. In High-Definition it looks absolutely spectacular Jerry Bruckheimer would be proud. This means that while the game remains challenging, players will never be frustrated by eye-wateringly hard levels or opponents. All the races take place on high-concept tracks (set in locations such as airports or freight loading docks) over five main environments in one urban sprawl. If the two courses we were allowed to charge around are any indication, then its likely that all of the courses will contain tons of exploding gas tanks, falling machinery and some gargantuan destructive set pieces. Players will have access to around 30 cars, which include muscle cars, super cars and trucks. The game is divided into the two modes of story and multiplayer (which can be played both online or in local co-op). For the latter, Black Rock have made a couple of modifications to the in-race action (there are no slow motion cinematics, for example) and wisely chosen to present players with all the tracks and vehicles unlocked from the start. The story mode, which follows the players progression up the ranks in some insane reality TV show about racing, requires players to unlock all the vehicles and races. However, it also contains some eye-popping cinematics and cleverly bookends every three races with an enthusiastic voice-over prompting players to tune in for the next episode of SplitSecond.
